Understanding

The data management cycle begins with the understanding of what data is, how it has been classified and where it will be located. This cycle is iterative and will keep looping back to understanding the data. For example, data may need to be re-classified as it changes and becomes aggregated. Data can be classified into three categories based on Western's Data Classification Standard.

See Western's Data Classification Standard for a description of the various classifications.
